Zardes sprains his knee and could miss November US qualifiers

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Columbus Crew striker Gyasi Zardes will likely take a two to four week break after spraining his left knee.

The 30-year-old contracted a 2nd degree MCL sprain towards the end of the first half of the 1-1 draw on Wednesday in Nashville, crew trainer Caleb Porter said on Friday when the injury was announced. Zardes was substituted at the beginning of the second half.

Zardes has scored nine goals in 21 games for Columbus this season. He has scored 14 goals in 65 international matches.

The Crew has remaining regular season league games against Philadelphia on Saturday, Cincinnati on Wednesday, Orlando on October 31st and the New York Red Bulls on November 7th. The MLS playoffs begin on November 20th.

The US will host Mexico in Cincinnati on November 12th and play four days later in Kingston, Jamaica.

The US may also have to do without Chelsea striker Christian Pulisic, who has not played since his left ankle sprain in a September 8 qualifier in Honduras, and Dortmund midfielder Gio Reyna, who has been injured in his right hamstring in the first El Salvador will miss the qualifying round on September 2nd.
