Women’s Soccer Blanks Colorado State, 3-0

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women’s soccer team earned its first win of the season with a 3-0 shutout against Colorado State. The Utes had three different players when the team scored its first shutout of the season.

“Today was a great team win in front of our wonderful fans,” said the head coach Hideki Nakada. “Colorado State was very committed on their defense which made it difficult for us to create good opportunities early on. We grew into the game and our wing and midfield play got better as the game progressed which allowed us to go behind more and scoring quality goals. I look forward to hosting a great Denver team here at Ute Field next Thursday night.”

the ute Madeleine Vergura, Courtney Brownand Brooklyn Blaylock scored for the Utes Evi Vitali and Kasey Wardle combined for shutdown. Vergura and Blaylock’s goals were her first as Ute.

Early in the competition, the Utes struggled to get things going on offense. Utah scored the game’s first goal in the 20th minute when the Rams were called to a handball in the box. Vergura took the PK and scored, giving Utah a 1-0 lead.

Less than five minutes later, the Utes scored their second goal of the game. Vergura, who was outside the box, found Brown, who was inside the box. The Rams goaltender came out to challenge and Brown smacked her over the head, extending the Utes’ lead to 2-0.

Colorado State had a scoring chance late in the first half when Aleyse Evers put the shot on goal and Utah went 2-0 into the half.

Utah wasted no time and extended the lead to 3-0 in the second half. Less than three minutes after half-time, Blaylock chased the ball down and controlled the ball just outside the box. She punched a defender and sent a shot flying from outside the box, and she smacked the goaltender into the top right corner of the goal for her first collegiate goal.

Late in the game, Kaitlyn Abrams had a good scoring opportunity, but Utah’s keeper Kasey Wardle made the save and kept the shutout in check.
