Women’s football opens 2022 with a draw against Stevens
HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Washington and Lee women’s soccer team battled Stevens to a goalless tie on Saturday, day one of the Haverford College Kick-off Classic to open their 2022 season.
The Generals start the season 0-0-1 while the Ducks are now at 0-1-1 this season after the draw. It is also W&L’s first goalless draw since the Spring 2021 ODAC Championship game against Bridgewater.
Senior midfielder Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) and the Generals fired in the opening minutes of the contest when Wielechowski made three shots in the first seven minutes. Wielechowski had her second try on target, but the shot was saved.
W&L controlled a majority of chances in the first half and held a 10-4 lead in total shots. However, Wielechowski’s second shot of the game was the only shot on target between the two sides in the first half.
In the second half, the Ducks turned the script around and controlled eight of the eleven shots in the frame. junior goalkeeper SidneySmith (Damascus Md. / Damascus) (0-0-1) had two shots on target and turned both of them sideways to keep Stevens off the board.
Wielechowski led both teams with her three shots and was a first-year player Sophie Berman (Robbinsville, NJ / Robbinsville) and Bryn Bissinger (Greenville, SC / St. Joseph’s Catholic) fired two shots each in their first collegiate action. Senior Defender Brenna Wehner (Crosswicks, NJ / The Hun School of Princeton) also recorded two shots for the generals. Smith played in goal every 90 minutes and finished the game with two saves.
Jana Mucci and Taylor Whitlock accelerated Stevens’ offensive with two shots each. A total of 10 different Stevens players were shot in the game. Dana Perry played in goal throughout the game and made four saves.
With both teams controlling offensive opportunities in one half each, shot counts ended roughly even, with the generals taking a slight 13-12 lead. Stevens owned the corner kick differential at 6-3.
The Generals are back in action tomorrow when they take on Arcadia in the Haverford College Kick-off Classic on day two at 3pm.
