Women’s football adds Beesley for 2022

WILMINGTON, NC— local product Summer Beesleywho played at nearby John T. Hoggard High School, has returned home after a season with George Washington to play for UNCW’s women’s soccer team.

Beesley, a 5-5 defenseman, spent last year with the Colonials where she played 864 minutes in 18 contests from eight starts. In her only season in the country’s capital, she hit five shots, three of which were on target.

“We’re excited that Summer is a Seahawk,” said UNCW’s fifth-year head coach Chris Neal. “She now has a year of experience at the Division I level and that will certainly be important as she prepares to compete for us in the Colonial Athletic Association. Summer is an aggressive and skillful wide player. I think that mentality will go well with our style of play.”

As a four-year letterwinner at Hoggard, Beesley anchored a Vikings defense that allowed 10 goals and produced 12 shutouts in 18 games as a senior. The Wilmington, NC native scored eight goals and shared six assists for the Vikings, who finished 15-2-1 in the 2021-22 season and advanced to the 4A East Finals.

For her efforts, Beesley was named the 2021 Mideastern Conference Player of the Year as well as the 2021 Coastal Preps Defensive Player of the Year. She was a two-time All-State, All-Region and All-Conference cast member for the Vikings.

Beesley played with the Wilmington Hammerheads youth club under coach Craig Johnson and Will Heaney, a volunteer assistant coach for UNCW. She competed with the Hammerheads in the 2019 ECNL National Selection Game in Greer, SC.

Beesley is the third current Seahawk, along with Blair barefoot and Ainsley Norrto have played at Hoggard.
