US U16 women’s national youth team defeats Sweden 4-1 to win all three UEFA development tournament games

RONNEBY, Sweden (May 23, 2022) – The US U16 women’s national youth team defeated hosts Sweden 4-1 to convincingly win all three games in their UEFA development tournament.

The USA defeated Norway 4-0 on May 18 and defeated France 3-1 on May 20 to beat their opponents 11-2 in the friendly. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these were the first internationals for the US U-16s since February 2020, when the USA played in a UEFA development tournament in England.

The USA fell behind for the first time in the tournament when Sweden’s Bianca Hultback Nattland finished 27thth minute to give her side a 1-0 lead at half time.

The second half belonged to the USA, who scored four unanswered goals in 29 minutes to end the game.

In a game in which the USA defeated Sweden 15-4, forward Kennedy Roesch finally equalized in the 58th minuteth minute when she dribbled across the penalty area to the left and fired from 12 meters from the left. It was her second goal of the tournament.

The USA took the lead just five minutes later when defender Carla Small, who hails from Waipahu, Hawaii, intercepted a pass from Sweden in her own box and completed it for the eventual winner. It was her first international goal.

The US collected in the 83rdapprox and 87th Minutes, the first came when striker Addison Hess dribbled into the left side of the box and put in a pass to striker Ava McDonald, who ended in the far post for her second goal of the competition.

The final score came after midfielder Grace Restovich dribbled into the middle of the attacking third and passed to striker Emeri Adames, who ran down the left touchline into the box. Adames took two touches and finished for the full-time scoreline and her first international goal.

The USA team was spearheaded by US U17 women’s youth national team head coach Natalia Astrain, who recently guided USA to the Concacaf U17 women’s championship in the Dominican Republic and a place at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2022 India. All players in this U-16 WYNT roster are age appropriate for this team.

Players born on or after January 1, 2006 were age eligible for this competition and all 20 players called up to Sweden were born in 2006.
