The FIU men’s soccer team, which was ranked 19th, secured the regular season championship of the Conference USA 2021 with a dominant 4-1 win over the defending NCAA Division I national champion Marshall, who was in 1st place, on Friday evening in front of a loud sold-out audience at the FIU football stadium.

“It’s hard to put into words how exciting and fun tonight was,” said Kyle Russell, head coach of FIU men’s football. “Our field, our stands, our stadium – it was full. The band, the cheerleaders, the alumni, family friends, the student body, there was no seating tonight, it was full. It was an incredible atmosphere for football. ”

“Marshall is a great team, they are # 1 in the country, but other than that, we’ve been training for them all year,” added Russell. “Every training session was important. We compete in games like every game was a championship game. So that was nothing new for us. It was a total team effort.”
In the early part of the game, the FIU were down 1-0 after a successful penalty from Marshall 12:12 in regular time.
The Panthers would take control from there with two goals in the first half before adding two more goals in the final 45 minutes.
