South Dakota takes on UNI in the first street competition
The South Dakota women’s soccer team takes its first road trip to Cedar Falls, Iowa for a Sunday matinee against Northern Iowa. The Coyotes are hoping for their first win of the new season after losing a hard-fought game to Loyola Chicago last Thursday. Kick-off for tonight’s game is scheduled for 1pm from UNI Soccer Field and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Despite holding an all-time 5-7-2 record against the Panthers, the Coyotes have back-to-back wins. USD won a quick home-and-home with UNI last season, winning both games 1-0.
South Dakota put up a good fight against reigning Missouri Valley champions Loyola Chicago in the opening game. The Coyotes had a few good chances late to end the game by one, but just missed those chances. Senior Shaylee Gailus took four shots in the game and had USD’s best opportunity with an open shot to the front of the box that grazed over the bar.
In the most recent encounter, the Coyotes shut out the Panthers for the second year in a row after throwing ten shots and three on target. Senior Jordan Centineo scored the winning goal in the 54th minute after a corner kick eventually fell in front of her and she scored her second goal of the 2021 season.
UNI clinched a 2-1 win over Grand View in the season opener. The Panthers scored their first goal from a Lauren Heinsch penalty and their second from a late-game kick from Siri Ott. Northern Iowa held its ground and clinched its first win of the season.
The Panthers ended 2021 with a 6-10-2 record. They held a .500 average at home and outplayed their opponents 19-12 on the UNI football field. UNI struggled on the road last season, posting a 1-5-2 record outside of Cedar Falls. The season ended for the Panthers last year after losing the opening round game of the Missouri Valley Tournament to Drake. The game ended 2-2 and went into overtime where Drake scored the golden goal and continued in the tournament.
One last thing
The Coyotes compiled a 2-3-3 record away from home last season to surpass their 8-1 record at home. One of their biggest away results was a 1-1 draw with Denver a week before the 2021 Summit League tournament.
