Matthew McConaughey plays the former Dallas Sting football coach in the upcoming movie – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
Hollywood loves underdog stories. The 1984 Dallas Stings win has it all. They were the underdog women’s soccer team that helped transform the sport for women.
“We thought we could compete with everyone,” said former Dallas Sting coach Bill Kinder.
He took the team to China in 1984 to participate in an international football tournament and play against some professional teams. The Dallas Sting was a club team based in Richardson.
“We started slowly. It took them a while to find their rhythm, but then we picked up speed,” said Kinder. “We beat Australia 2-0 in the final.”
“They would be cheering ‘USA, USA’ for USA,” said former Dallas Sting forward Sheri Mungai.
The team was the first American soccer team, male or female, to win a major international tournament. It helped transform women’s football.
“From that, the US Soccer Association decided that maybe we have something in girls’ soccer that we don’t have in men’s soccer,” said Kinder. “And started the women’s national team from that event.”
Now it’s the subject of a Hollywood movie in the making.
“They got Matthew McConaughey to play the lead,” Kinder said, implying that McConaughey will play him. “I think he’s a great choice because he’s a great actor and doesn’t need to work on his accent!”
For some former Dallas Sting players, the prospect of a film about their role in sports history brings back memories.
“We were just a bunch of kids playing a sport that we loved,” said Toni Catchings, a former Dallas Sting midfielder. “I’m thrilled that girls these days have the opportunities they have and I hope it continues to improve.”
“We didn’t have anyone to watch in feature films or anything like that,” said former Dallas Sting defense attorney Michelle Kimzey. “I think it’s great that they now have these role models.”
“We had fun doing it,” said former Dallas Sting forward Erin Adamson-O’Donnell. “Thank you kids for that.”
“I give all my credit to the young ladies who have put in all the hard work,” said Kinder. “As I tell them, they were the circus, I just took the truck to the next town.”
Kinder said the film’s producers and director said he and McConaughey would be seeing each other in the future to get to know each other.
