ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – Mountain West regular season champions Lobo Women’s Soccer Team closed the conference Saturday afternoon when they beat Boise State 2-1 in a thrilling overtime to win the MW tournament title. “We’ve been here before, we’ve been here too often to be honest, but over time we thrive under pressure and we thrive in situations like this,” said UNM Forward Jadyn Edwards.

Edwards scored the decisive goal in extra time, just 35 seconds in extra time. It was an incredible feeling for this team and Head Coach Heather Dyche couldn’t be more proud of her team. “I think it’s always what you hope for and we are certainly proud of our performance over the last year, especially during COVID, but we have lost some great players. So it was really amazing to see how some players can move up and also simply rely on our returners. So it’s something you always hope for but never expect, ”said Heather Dyche.

Zaria Katesigwa was named Tournament MVP after that win, and that meant a lot to the UNM Freshman, who was also named MW Newcomer of the Year. Katesigwa had a stellar first season for the Lobos, and she did all of this while grappling with her mother’s untimely death. “This year has been great, you know, without my team, with the support of my team, my blood family to support me, it was just great and I just know that God is up there and my mother is watching and everyone supports us. It was just amazing, ”said Katesigwa.

UNM will automatically receive a bid for this year’s NCAA tournament, and they’ll find out where to pile up when the NCAA announces their bracket on Monday.
