BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Jeff Carr never thought he would be inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame when he started Eastern Florida State College’s women’s soccer program in 2010.

But 11 years and 150 wins later, Carr will be inducted into the NJCAA Women’s Soccer Hall of Fame on November 14, before the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament begins at Daytona State College.

Carr was inducted into the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame in the Sports Development category in 2017.

“I never thought it would be what we are today,” said Car, who is also the vice president of the College of Athletics.

“I just knew that we had to get better every day, we had to grind and have this chip on our shoulder so that we would never be satisfied and never satisfied. I just wanted to be competitive and not embarrass the school. I could never have imagined that we would be so successful. “

Carr started the women’s soccer program from scratch, remembering the days without a field, playing the first scrimmage on the baseball field, practicing in a field with a tree on it and hill after hill of fire ants.

They played games across Brevard County, from Palm Bay Regional and Melbourne Central Catholic to Viera Regional Park, until they built what is now Orlando Health Stadium on Melbourne campus.

And despite these challenges, Carr led the team to the national tournament eight years in a row, finishing second twice in 2012 and 2015.

“I am really proud of what we have achieved with the support of Dr. Richey and Jack Parker have made it special, ”said Carr.

“We have achieved a lot in a short period of time and are fortunate that the women’s soccer program at Eastern Florida State College is one of the top programs in the country year after year.”

Carr is quick to point out that it’s the players who made all of this possible, and the Newcastle, Ontario native has had some really special players over the years.

“I’ve been fortunate to recruit some really special players who will make your program great. I think you can be a good coach and if you can’t recruit the best it doesn’t matter, ”said Carr.

“If you look at some of the teams we had, we had a 29-goal goalscorer and another at 27 and several others who scored in youth. But the real secret is the love for one another, the chemistry in almost all teams makes us so successful year after year.

“It’s been a blessing to be here from the start and to see the fruits of all this work, but I’m so excited about all of the young women I’ve been able to train. Some are mothers, some play professionally, some have great careers in what they set out to do. “

“To see how they are doing well is something special. Relationships are what I value even more than victories. To be honest, I remember less the victories than the defeats. Fortunately we don’t have that many losses, but I still remember a few today. “

With this year’s team preparing to compete in the national tournament for the 10th consecutive year to win their first title, it is only appropriate that the coach who started it all be recognized before the tournament begins.

After all, Carr had some of his biggest wins and most memorable moments during the national tournament.

“We did some great runs, even if we were very low we did a great run to make it into the last four,” said Carr.

“It was exciting, even the games we lost were exciting, most of them were close one-goal games. The way there and we never thought that we would not get out of the game of pool was our mentality. And the teams bought into what we preached and it just carried over from each class to the next. The new girls found out from the returnees that this is the case here.

“I wouldn’t trade it for anything, it was very special.”
