Here are 11 District 10 footballers to watch in 2022

The McDowell and Villa Maria girls’ soccer teams went the deepest into PIAA tournament play of any District 10 program a year ago. The Trojans qualified for the PIAA Class 4A Quarterfinals while Villa reached the Class 2A Quarterfinals.

McDowell and Villa Maria achieved shutout wins in their D-10 championship victories over Erie and Fort LeBoeuf, respectively. Warren (3A) and Mercer (1A) were the other D-10 champions.

The Trojans and Villa’s former squad, now competing as Cathedral Prep, bring back plenty of power in 2022, uniting to see five of the Erie Times-News’ top 11 preseason players feature in District 10:

Georgie Bickling, Warren, Sr

Bickling has been a District 10 All-Star and All-Region honoree in each of the past two seasons. She helped fuel the Dragons’ run to the PIAA Class 3A Quarterfinals in 2021. In the D-10 championship game, she had an assist in a 2-1 win over Meadville before finishing with a goal and an assist in a 2-1 PIAA game win over Bradford.

Elise Cacchione, Fort LeBoeuf, senior

Cacchion was an important part of the Bison’s historic year in 2021 as Fort LeBoeuf finished with a 16-1 record after losing to Villa Maria in the Class 2A D-10 championship game. The Bison achieved their first two playoff wins in program history when Cacchione scored three goals in those two games. She is a two-time All-Region honoree and was named to the second team of the Erie Times-News District 10 as a junior.

Grace Emanuel, McDowell, Sr

Emanuel was the Region 6 Player of the Year for region champion Trojans. She was also selected to the District 10 first team, her third straight D-10 honors, and Region 6 first team. Emanuel was a key wheel for the Trojans’ D-10 Class 4A Championship squad, providing a goal and two assists in McDowell’s win in the title game against Erie High.

Abby Faulhaber, McDowell, Sr

Faulhaber led McDowell with two goals in the 8-0 District 10 Class 4A championship win over Erie High last year. She was named to the District 10 first team and Region 6 first team for the Trojans, who advanced to the PIAA Quarterfinals.

Sara Gennuso, Fairview, senior

Gennuso, a midfielder, is a two-time All Region honors winner for the Tigers. She had an assist on Fairview’s last time out when the Tigers were eliminated by General McLane in the D-10 Class 2A quarterfinals. Gennuso was a District 10 second-team All-Star last year.

Brooklyn Respecki, Gen. McLane, Sr

Already General McLane’s record holder for career goals, Respecki has her entire senior year to build on her legacy. Respecki has been a District 10 All-Star in each of the past three seasons. Last year, she was named to the D-10 and Region 4 first teams. Respecki was the 2020 Region 4 Player of the Year.

Sydney Rotko, General McLane, Jr

The only eleventh grader in the top 11 of D-10 girls soccer girls, Rotko was a 2021 District 10 second-team All-Star and Region 4 first-team All-Star. Rotko was second to Respecki in goals last year the Lancers.

Hannah Shepard, McDowell, Sr

Shepard was a key figure in McDowell’s backline a year ago, helping the Trojans win the Region 6 title and reach the PIAA Class 4A Quarterfinals. McDowell earned an 8-0 win in the D-10 final ahead of two PIAA wins, giving up just one goal in those two games. The Trojans’ season ended in a 1-0 Piaa quarter-final defeat by Central Dauphin on penalties. Shepard is a two-time District 10 All-Star and a Region Honoree in both years.

Alexa Tojaga, Head of Cathedral Preparation

Tojaga, a two-time District 10 All-Star, is a returning captain for Cathedral Prep, which made its last appearance as Villa Maria last year. The Victors won the Region 4 championship and advanced to the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinals before falling to North Catholic. Tojaga, a Region 4 All-Star last year, recorded a goal and an assist in Villa Maria’s 4-0 win in the District 10 Championship game against Fort LeBoeuf.

Moira Thunell, Head of Cathedral Preparation

Thunell is one of two returning captains for the inaugural season of girls’ football Cathedral Prep. Last year, she was a District 10 second-team All-Star and a Region 4 first-team All-Star.

Makenzie Yanc, Cambridge Springs, Sr

As a multisport star, Yanc leads the assault on Cambridge Springs. Yanc, a two-time region all-star, will be without older sister and Cambridge Springs graduate Madison for the first time in her high school football career.
