HEPHZIBAH, Georgia (WRDW / WAGT) – Fans fill the stands at Hephzibah High School as the football season kicks off. You can feel the energy behind the program with your new head coach. Soccer coach Daniel Dorsey knows a thing or two about small-town soccer, working before Hephzibah in rural South Georgia. Friday evenings in the field feel familiar.

“I feel like this is small town football even though we’re part of the RCSS and connected to Augusta. That really has the football feeling of the small town on Friday evening, ”he said.

“I have the feeling that we have as much talent as everyone else in the region and in the state. It’s just about empowering them to be noticed and seen by coaches and recruiters, ”he said.

Dorsey tries to put Hephzibah in the spotlight. Before the start of last year’s season, he took over the management of Hephzibah’s football program. It was far from normal, mix that with COVID, and they ended up with a 3 and a 5 record.

“Our expectation is to come out better than last year,” he said.

This off-season was full of changes, including the addition of entirely new staff. Guys with college experience who know what it takes to get to the next level.

“This year we actually had a full offseason, a full summer of implementing ideas, philosophies and principles,” he said.

They hope to get back to the playoffs and show off some of the talent they believe can compete with anyone in the state.

“I’m thrilled. We put all the work and crush into it and now it’s time to cash the check,” he said.

The program believes they can compete with anyone in the state. They say it’s just about us being there and getting this attention for their players so that they stand out.
