FCS All-American commits to Kentucky

With the status of All-SEC running back Chris Rodriguez unclear for next season, FCS All-American running back and Sam Houston State transfer Ramon Jefferson Kentucky signed, he announced on Tuesday via Twitter.

“Ultimately, I felt the scheme would fit my running style, and I felt like I could be a great addition to an already successful offense in the SEC,” Jefferson told 247Sports’ Chris Hummer.

He will be immediately eligible to play for the Wildcats in 2022.

Jefferson, ranked No. 2 available player in the 247Sports transfer rankings, initially signed for Colorado a few weeks after entering the transfer portal on January 14. He later broke away from the Buffaloes on May 20 and visited the UK earlier this month.

“It was nice, I really enjoyed it,” Jefferson told 247Sports. “I really like the offensive scheme, I think it will suit my style of play. … The staff and players I spoke to were really down to earth and open, a great conference (and Kentucky) has been successful over the past (few) years.”

Jefferson has received a 90 rating from the 247Sports Transfer Rankings team and is classified as a 4-star potential player. He is the seventh immediate transfer to sign and join with the Wildcats during this recruitment cycle Tayvion Robinson (Virginia Tech) Tashawn Manning (maroon), Darrion Henry Young (State of Ohio), Keidron Smith (old lady), Jordan Robinson (Livingstone College) and Zion Childress (State of Texas).

The 5-foot-10, 215-pounder rushed for 1,155 yards and 13 touchdowns while averaging 6.7 yards per carry for the Bearkats last season en route to Second Team All-American designation. A native of the Bronx, New York, Jefferson began his career at Maine under the Black Bears’ offensive coordinator and former British play-caller Liam Coenwhere he rushed for 1,096 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Jefferson then transferred to Garden City Community College and rushed for 994 yards and 13 points. In two seasons at Sam Houston State, Jefferson rushed for nearly 2,000 yards and 20 points while averaging over 6.0 yards per carry.

Over the course of his four-year collegiate career, Jefferson has accumulated over 4,000 career rushing yards and 54 touchdowns.

He joins a British running back room that also stars Rodriguez, who needs just 1,134 yards to become the school’s all-time all-time rusher. Kavosiey smoke, JuTahn McClainand La’Vell Wrightwho showed promise last season as a true newcomer.

The Wildcats’ 2022 schedule includes home non-conference games with MAC champion Miami (Ohio), Youngstown State, Northern Illinois and archrival Louisville, as well as SEC tilts in Florida, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Tennessee, at Missouri and Van derbilt. Defending champion Georgia is coming to Kroger Field on November 19th.

Head coach Mark Stoops only needs two wins to surpass the legendary Bear Bryant and become the most successful coach of all time. Kentucky will start the 2022 season against the Redhawks September 3 at Kroger Field in Lexington. UK has won 16 straight non-conference games, the longest active streak in college football.

Rodriguez, who announced in January he would be returning for his senior season, was arrested and charged with drink driving and careless driving in early May.
