Fanning named NCAA Woman of the Year

INDIANAPOLIS – Purdue Fort Wayne student and athlete in women’s soccer Gabrielle Fanning was selected as a candidate for the 2022 Woman of the Year award. A total of 577 collegiate athletes were nominated for the award, which is presented to a graduate student who has distinguished herself in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service and leadership throughout her collegiate career.

Fanning has been a key member of the Mastodons’ line of defense since 2017, partially responsible for 10 shutouts during her time as Mastodon. She has played in 64 games from 61 starts and has a chance to become the program’s all-time leader in both categories. She is a two-time All-Horizon League selection and a six-time Academic Honor Roll selection.

Most recently, Fanning helped the Mastodons finish sixth in the Horizon League in 2021, the best for the program in almost a decade. The Mastodons qualified for their first place finish in the Horizon League Championship thanks to Fanning’s help in anchoring the backline.

Fanning has been a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National Athlete Honor Society for two years. She is also a published author in the Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research with her article Effects of Face Masks on the Acoustic Properties of Speech.

Fanning graduated from Purdue Fort Wayne in Spring 2022 with degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders and General Studies. She will return to the Mastodon women’s soccer team this fall, taking advantage of the extra year granted by the NCAA. The Mastodons open their season with an exhibition in Indiana State on August 7, and the regular season opener is on August 18 when they welcome Chicago State to the Hefner Soccer Complex.
