SUPERIOR, Wisconsin – We’re just a week from the return of college sport in Northland, and this week the UW women’s superior soccer team returned to the field, ready for a big fall season.
Only three months ago the Yellowjackets ended a strong spring season 7-3 and made it to their second UMAC championship game. Now, already back on the field, UWS is ready to build on this success.
âThe season-to-season turnaround time was much shorter than normal, so we had to stay fitter and we’re still in some kind of game mode. We definitely want to go further. I see a lot of talent from our new class, âsaid senior striker Annah Schussman.
âTo be able to participate and compete with the team, it was a lot of emotional support they got from each other. Additionally, the season we’ve made is going to be another record season, an opportunity for us to really build on the foundations and expand for the next year, it will be a great stepping stone and it will help us move forward. âHead coach Allison DeGroot added .
The Yellowjackets return except for one player from last year, including goalkeeper and reigning UMAC Defensive Player of the Year Morgan Philliber. Now entering her fifth year, she is ready to finally bring home the first UMAC title of the program.
âWe are highly motivated. There are players in this program that we’ve only talked about since we’ve been here, so we want to do that this year before we all go, âsaid Philliber.
âThis senior class was their freshman, that was the first year we made it to the championship, and they’re hungry, they want it. Between experience, depth, fitness and skill, we’ve really built every piece and this year we’re a bit better in all areas, âadded DeGroot.
The UWS will open the regular season on September 1st with Saint Mary’s.
