Capitanes del Futuro: MLS and P&G launch free Hispanic youth leadership program
Major League Soccer, P&G brands such as Gillette, Always, Crest and Oral-B, and The Hispanic Star have partnered to launch Capitanes del Futuro, a unique Hispanic youth leadership program for Hispanic youth aimed at nurturing a passion for soccer children across the country.
The Capitanes del Futuro initiative will focus on providing guidance to boys and girls ages 12-18 through free access to role models, resources, tools and skills designed to open their minds, build their confidence and to help them overcome structural obstacles that often arise on the path to higher education.
“Capitanes del Futuro is another way we are fueling the advancement of Hispanic communities and equipping youth with the tools and resources to become America’s future leaders,” said Marc Pritchard, chief brand officer at Procter & Gamble, in a statement.
The program includes workshops, live and virtual events as well as playful learning. In addition, Capitanes del Futuro will also offer a digital library featuring inspirational videos featuring conversations between legendary sportscaster Fernando Fiore and top MLS players, including FC Cincinnati stars Luciano Acosta and Brandon Vazquez, as well as Inter Miami forward Gonzalo Higuain , who tell stories about their own journey to success, their mentors and role models.
“I woke up at 5 a.m. and had one of my parents drive me to the border, train, and then we lined up to go back to the United States,” Vazquez recalled in his conversation with Fiore. “I went to school online because I would be going back at 2 or 3 p.m.”
In addition to player talks, the program will also feature lessons and thoughts from football industry leaders, including Heidi Pellerano, Concacaf’s Chief Commercial Officer.
“I think it’s important as a woman in sport to really show others the way and how to do it well,” Pellerano told Fiore. “You have an innate ability to teach others.”
