Bellarmine wins women’s football in season opener

Louisville, Ky. Wright State’s women’s soccer program kicked off the 2022 season with a 2-1 win over Bellarmine Thursday night at Frazier Stadium.

Wright State (1-0) overcame an early first-half deficit with two unanswered goals to earn the season-opening win. Olga Massombo scored the Raiders’ first goal of the season in the 39th minute Michelle Rings coupled with the game-winning goal from a free-kick with just 10 minutes left in non-conference competition.

Amber Branum and Kaylin Helinski contributed assists to Massombo’s goal, which resulted from WSU’s first corner kick of the game. goalkeeper Jessica Seward ended with two saves in the winning streak.

The Raiders overtook Bellarmine (0-1) 10-9, including four shots on target. Lauren Borchert and Massombo shared the team lead in shots by two each.

With just one combined shot in the opening 10 minutes, both defenses were in control early on. However, Bellarmine’s Alexa Orozco scored in the back net in the 11th minute.

Wright State nearly leveled the game with a Borchert shot on goal after 22 minutes, but goaltender Cambria Kingman saved the save to keep the Raiders off the scoreboard. WSU continued to attack offensively Josie Krupp In the 27th minute he shot wide of the goal on the right.

The Raiders’ constant pressure paid off in the 39th minute as Massombo leveled the game with her first goal of the season from a corner she delivered Olivia Keule.

Bellarmine came out of the break at 1-1 and threatened to retake the lead by firing five shots in the first 20 minutes. However, Wright State kept the Knights scoreless, which included a save from Seward.

The Raiders were plagued by four offsides in the second half but finally prevailed in the 79th minute thanks to a Rings free-kick.

WSU held the Knights back for the remainder of the game, allowing no shots while doing so.

The Raiders’ starting lineup included two freshmen Mariella Hartman and Kaylee Pham. newcomers Alan Nesbit, Elise Kanterand Branum logged her first-ever college minutes off the bench for the Raiders.

Wright State will be in Dayton for an off-conference competition on Sunday, August 21. The rivalry match begins at 6 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
